End of the last glacial period, “The Ice Age”, which carved the three peaks and the valleys around them.
1887down arrowThe first recorded ascent of the three hills. Local teachers J.R. Wynne-Edwards and D.R. Smith completed the walk in 10 hours.
1954down arrowThe Yorkshire Three Peaks fell race takes place for the first time. It is won by Fred Bagley of Preston in a time of 3 hours 48 minutes. It has been held annually ever since other than in 2001 when it was prevented by foot and mouth disease. https://www.threepeaksrace.org/
1959down arrowThe first known circuit of the Three Peaks by bike was completed by Kevin Watson, 14, a local school boy. His time was 6 hours 45 minutes. Kevin described Whernside as ‘hard going’, Ingleborough as ‘a bit tricky’ and Penyghent as ‘fairly easy’.
1961down arrow The Three Peaks cyclo cross race established. This is now held annually and takes a different route than the walking route or the foot race. Many of the paths are closed to bicycles and only opened on race day. http://3peakscyclocross.org.uk/
1968down arrowThe Penyghent Cafe opens its clocking in service for walkers aiming to join the Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club. For many years it also operated a safety check-in system though this has now been suspended.
1974down arrowJeff Norman completes the fell race in a record time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and 53 seconds. 
1991down arrowAlfred Wainwright’s ‘Wainwright in the Limestone Dales’ published. In it he laments that “Some participants have chosen to regard the walk as a race, and this is to be greatly regretted, walking is a pleasure to be enjoyed in comfort“
1996down arrowAndy Peace wins the fell race in a new record of time of 02:46:03 (The current approved route is longer than that taken by Jeff Norman when he set the record in 1974.) The record stands today.
2008down arrowAnna Pichrtova sets the current female record with a time of 3:14:43
2009down arrowThe Three Peaks project is set up by the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  Among other things it begins work on establishing paths to protect some of the most sensitive areas of land. http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/threepeaks
2012down arrow A new path is opened between Penyghent and High Birkwith. The path avoids Black Dub on which the boggy ground had been heavily damaged by the high numbers of walkers.
